I’m continuing to settle in this week. I’ve spent the last few days enjoying outdoor walks and open windows on a daily basis while Tim has been working. I know the fall season has just started here, but the weather has been warm (upper-80s) and sunny since my arrival. The sea breeze rolls in by the afternoon, combing its fingers through the leaves in the trees and cooling things down.
I’ve enjoyed a slow start to the week, but this past weekend was full of mini adventures and lots of socializing.
On Friday evening, Tim drove us and a picnic dinner down to Cottesloe Beach to enjoy the Sculpture by the Sea exhibit that Perth hosts each year. It was a really beautiful way to connect with the local culture and surroundings. I was so happy he’d chosen to take us during golden hour for two reasons: the way the light interacted with the sculptures made for a magical experience, and sunsets over the ocean are a rarity for this East Coast girl.
My personal favorite was a series of three sculptures constructed mainly of jarrah (an Australian eucalyptus wood). I love the way the curves rise out of the sand like some fantasy beach tree and the contrast of the earthy red against the sky. Discovering that the piece’s title is ‘Unprecedented’ felt fitting.
There were so many other amazing pieces on display. If you’re interested, Sculpture by the Sea put out a video that much better showcases the artwork and the surrounding beach than my photos (Dad, it’s on YouTube for your benefit!).
On Saturday we had a wedding reception to attend. Tim kept my arrival a secret from several of his friends so it was fun to see everyone’s reaction when we arrived. I reconnected with people I’d met on my previous trip and met many new faces.
On Sunday we spent the afternoon at a pub with several of Tim’s other friends. One of the things I love about this city is the number of open-air bars/pubs/restaurants it has to offer. You can spend hours outside in the sun (or under the “shade sails”…I have to remember that the UV index is much different here) and fresh air while enjoying a drink and some food.
Sending my love to all of you—thanks for supporting me and following along in this unprecedented chapter of my life. Until next week! xo
Lovely description of the sand sculpture event. There are plenty of magazines that would be interested in an expanded article on it. Just something to consider. Missing you back here in the Great North.
